Learning intelligently...
At 5 years old, when the children begin to learn the English alphabet, they also learn to recognise the Khmer alphabet. The actual primary class begins at 6. At this point, the children learn both Khmer and English. The Khmer curriculum is from the Ministry of Education that we strictly follow. The English part is a top up. The main emphasis is on English proficiency, general knowledge with an eye on what is more useful and relevant to teach.
Children are taught all other subjects - Maths, cultural subjects, computer, art and craft - but we chose what we think is more urgent and more relevant to teach at any one time. For example, when an earthquake hited Haiti, the students learnt about the structure of the earth, the tectonic plates, facts about Haiti and so on.
Several subjects come together to make children aware all things are interrelated. Likewise, in biology, we choose to teach the children about the cardiovascular system, heart diseases, obesity and nutrition to bring about an awareness about healthy eating. At the primary level, we think it is more important to raise awareness than to teach facts that children can't relate to, following an arbitrary schedule.
At 6, children begin to learn French as a foreign language. Again, they just learn to speak, not to read or write. French class is 30mn long everyday. About two years later, they start to learn to read.
Besides academic subjects, students also have art&craft, acting, dancing, swimming, Tai Kwan Do and music classes.
