Lydie & Adrien, a year at Seametrey...
It's 4 p.m and the school day is over.... Lydie and Adrien are two French teachers working here at Seametrey for a year. Here is their experience with working at a Montessori school in the heart of Phnom Penh.
Can you describe the environment that you live and work in, here at Seametrey?
When we arrived at Seametrey, we discovered a children’s village in which each of the children grow and learn at their own rhythm. Seametrey is an open spaced school where the learning areas are all connected. In this “village" or "house", the younger as well as the older pupils have dedicated spaces to learn in, but this design does not prevent nursery and primary classes from interacting. Just like a big family, all the children and the teachers get together regularly in order to share special moments during the day.
For how long are you going to work at the Seametrey Children’s village?
We decided to take a year off in France to share an entire school year with the Seametrey children.
"We have the feeling that our teaching skills are getting richer here"
Were you familiar with the Montessori approach before coming here? What do you think about it?
We had only been exposed to the Montessori approach in a theoratical way. Here, we have the chance to get a daily training and to use the sensorial material with the children. Every day, we see the efficiency of the approach. It allows the pupils to learn at their own rhythm, they
acquire a larger amount autonomy, and the surely understand the importance of what is being taught to them.
Could you choose 3 words which would best describe the Seametrey Children’s village?
The school offers to the children: more autonomy, a spirit of solidarity, and the competencies needed for their future (linguistic, cultural and disciplinary competencies).
Do you feel you are improving your teaching skills by working at Seametrey? And if so, in what way?
Yes! We have the feeling that our teaching skills are getting richer here. We will come back to France with new ideas, wishes and projects. Besides, our stay here has allowed us to improve our English a lot.
